This must be some kind of record

I got my car back from the latest theft attempt on Thursday. I stayed in all weekend, but ventured out tonight to the Park Bar to meet up with friends for a bit. Someone broke into my car again just to rifle around and see if there was anything in it. At least they didn't rip apart the ignition this time.

Five days - that's definitely a record. The previous record was two weeks. You're improving, Detroit.

God, whatever I did to piss you off for this shitty year, mea culpa. Please forgive me.

I have lived in Detroit with my partner for the past twenty years and have not had cars stolen. It is possible but you need to alarm your car, use a club, don't keep laptops on the front seat and consider driving something that theives do not want to take for parts i.e. a Volvo, Mazda or something not too mass. Perhaps a diffrent neighborhood might work too.

OK, this and a few other comments I've had from other sources definitely warrant some clarification.

1) My car has an anti-theft device. It has that micro-chip in the key that prevents the engine from running for more than a few seconds if the key is not in the ignition. This is why I have so many theft attempts and no actual thefts. Right now I am about 50/50 car theft attempts vs. simple break-ins.

2) Car alarms do not work, I think twenty-five years into their use anyone who lives in a city knows they just blare and blare and are ignored.

3) I do not keep anything in my car. I have lived in major cities for the bulk of my adult life and I know that you cannot leave shit in your car. I learned it the hard way in DC when my car was broken into and a drag queen friend's luggage was stolen. "Whose size 12 pump is that officer? Um, a friend's."

4) I am open to anyone purchasing a less "mass" car for me, but that is not something I will be doing on my own at this time. American cars only, please.

5) I have had my car broken into in almost every area of downtown Detroit. Lafayette Park, Eastern Market, Corktown, Midtown, Park Avenue, Harmonie Park. Three times in gated lots. Three times it wasn't even my car, it was various friends' cars I was driving while mine was in the shop from the latest break-in. So if by a "different neighborhood" you mean San Francisco, then perhaps that is a suggestion I can work with.

I do not know why I get all these breakins when apparently nobody else in the city does, but having to make $2,000 in deductible payments over three years is really starting to get me down.
